My name is Miguel and I am a full-time private tutor and I have a B.S. from UC Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering. I am also a part-time math and science teacher working at a private school in Albany, CA where I have worked for 11 years and have 16 years of experience tutoring at community colleges, I also supervised math tutors at UC Berkeley Academic Service Centers, briefly worked at Mathnasium of Piedmont, and worked for the nonprofit organization Making Waves Education Program in Richmond, CA. I have been tutoring online since 2019. I also speak fluent Spanish. I can provide support with homework, online homework, studying for a test, understanding a difficult concept, help with projects, and prepare for AP tests.

Miguel guided my daughter as she was working on AP Chemistry exam prep. They worked diligently for 2 months before the assessment, reviewing practice items. Miguel knows the subject well and knows how to support students by listening to their thinking aloud and working through the problems, pointing to places where there could be misunderstanding on the student’s part. In addition to passing AP Chemistry exam, my daughter increased her confidence in the subject and overcame the frustration she had when she felt she had gaps in understanding, or not enough time in class to unpack challenging problems. Miguel tutored my son in pre-calculus. He was very professional, easy to understand, and was able to break down complex concepts to my son. I must say that this was money well spent. We met with Miguel each week and covered topics that were going to be presented the following week or worked on homework. This approach allowed my son to easily stay abreast of school work. His pricing was affordable and commensurate to what others are charging. I also found that because he was on the West Coast and we’re on the east coast, it allowed us greater flexibility to select sessions that met our schedules. My son earned an A this semester and Miguel was a large part of his success. My son was also taking Physics this term and it was extraordinarily helpful to be able to get assistance in this area without looking for another tutor. We’re on track to getting an A in Physics as well. My only regret is that I didn’t engage Miguel sooner! Miguel Chan helped my high school junior immensely with AP Chemistry. Her in-school teacher was very behind in the curriculum wouldn't come close to completing the topics in time for the AP exam. Through only a few weeks, this tutoring covered all units in depth, provided extra free response practice, and offered testing tips for saving time during the exam and getting the best score possible. Tutoring is specific to the individual and student-driven, and I would highly recommend science students to work with Miguel for bridging the gap between school and high stakes exams.

I hired a few honor chemistry and math tutors before for my daughter and she didn’t notice any difference until she works with Miguel. She said after working with Miguel, she realized maybe the other tutors did not know their subject very well. Miguel makes things easier to understand and is very knowledgeable. Her grades have also improved tremendously within a couple of months with Miguel.

My son has had 6 or 7 sessions with Miguel over the last 2 weeks. He finds these sessions very helpful. He wanted to “fill the gaps” in his understanding of Algebra 2/ trigonometry before starting on pre-calculus this fall. We will continue with sessions as school start. With remote learning, I want to make sure that my son’s math does not fall behind and I’m counting on Miguel’s help to achieve this.

My daughter just did the first tutoring with Miguel yesterday. They went over her test. He can explain the reason why and teach my daughter how to analyze the problems. Will try the second lesson.
My daughter had had a couple of sessions with Miguel (Trigonometry and Chemistry). She likes his style of asking her questions to get her thinking about solving the problem rather than just "teaching" her how to do it.
On-time and always knew how to solve any of the problems I had and explained it in a very clear way.

Our teenage twins were struggling with keeping up in Geometry, according to them every week the teachers were introducing a new concept. We signed them up for after school tutorial with the school, which helped but nightly they were both going to bed stressed out. Today, while my daughter was preparing breakfast she started crying. I sat them down and told them I didn’t want to see them stressing and at this point I will settle for them passing the class with a C this semester just to take their stress levels down and asked if they wanted outside tutoring. They both jumped at the opportunity, long story short. After reading reviews of several tutors Miguel was very responsive and ready to work with them on the spot. We jumped at the opportunity and they completed 2 hours of tutorial with him. According to the kids...it was worth it!! We have already scheduled another session and we intend to continue working with Miguel. Thank you Miguel!! Update to our initial review 12.20.19: Our twins passed their end of semester Geometry finals with 82 and 80...keep in mind they were struggling. We still continue to tutor with Miguel weekly, we on on break for Christmas and will continue to use his services. I sent a screenshot of their GPA to their dad and he said Awesome job done by us and the tutor.
